Japan Advanced Institute of Science and Technology invites applications for an Assistant Professor in the area of information theory, machine learning, or their intersection.

The School of Information Science at the Japan Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (JAIST) invites applications for an assistant professor in the area of information theory, machine learning, or its intersection. Areas of interest are broadly within the scope of information theory, including but not limited to coding theory, Shannon theory, network information theory, communication theory, and their applications to data storage and wireless communications. Candidates with experience or demonstrated interest in mathematical and information-theoretic aspects of machine learning will be given particular consideration. In addition to conducting research, responsibilities include graduate-level teaching, advising graduate students and seeking external research funding. Applicants must hold a Ph.D. degree in a relevant field by employment start date.

Female researchers are encouraged to apply.

The appointment will start October 2019, and is for five years. The application deadline is April 25, 2019 17:00 Japan time.

JAIST is located in the city of Nomi in Ishikawa Prefecture. The campus site enjoys scenic beauty, overlooking nearby counties and the city of Kanazawa to the north, the Sea of Japan to the west, forests and pastures to the south, and the spectacular Mt. Hakusan to the east. There are numerous recreational opportunities throughout the year, including nearby ski resorts, beaches and seaside parks, golf courses, hot springs and athletic and recreational parks. With a population density far below that of the Pacific side of the island of Honshu, the area affords easy access to wilderness and outdoor recreation. The historic city of Kanazawa, a hidden gem of Japan, is within 20 km of JAIST.
