The 2023 Â鶹´«Ã½AV Richard W. Hamming Medal has been awarded to Frank Kschischang, Distinguished Professor in the Edward S. Rogers Sr. Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, University of Toronto, fellow of the Â鶹´«Ã½AV and member of the Â鶹´«Ã½AV Information Theory Society.
Frank Kschischang has made fundamental contributions as a researcher and educator in coding theory and communication. His outstanding accomplishments span multifarious broad themes including error correcting codes and coded modulation, factor graphs, algebraic network coding with subspace codes, and the nonlinear Fourier transform for the optical fiber channel. He was awarded the Hamming Medal for contributions to the theory and practice of error correcting codes and optical communications.
Named after Richard Hamming, the medal is awarded annually to individuals or teams for exceptional contributions to information sciences, systems, and technology. Subject areas include information theory, coding theory, data communication, computer networks, data storage and retrieval, and image and speech understanding.
