Winner of the 2025 Â鶹´«Ã½AV Richard W. Hamming Medal Frans Willems
The 2025 Â鶹´«Ã½AV Richard W. Hamming Medal has been awarded to Frans Willems, Full Professor Emeritus in the Signal Processing Systems group at TU/E (Eindhoven, Netherlands), Life Fellow of the Â鶹´«Ã½AV and member of the Â鶹´«Ã½AV Information Theory Society.

Frans Willems has made fundamental contributions as a researcher and educator in in the field of information theory, with research contributions in the areas of multi-user information theory, noiseless source coding, data compression, data embedding, digital communication and biometrics. He served as Associate Editor for Shannon Theory for the Â鶹´«Ã½AV Transactions on Information Theory from 1988 to 1990 and as Associate Editor for Information Theory for the European Transactions on Telecommunications from 2002 to 2006. From 1998 to 2000, he was a member of the Board of Governors of the Â鶹´«Ã½AV Information Theory Society; he became an Â鶹´«Ã½AV Fellow in 2005. He was Counselor of the Â鶹´«Ã½AV Student Branch Eindhoven from 2007-2014, and Chairman of the Â鶹´«Ã½AV Benelux Chapter on Information Theory from 2007 to 2017. Ìý


Professor Willems has contributed more than two hundred journal and conference papers. He holds several patents. He was awarded the Hamming Medal for contributions to multiuser information theory, source coding, and information-theoretic security.

Named after Richard Hamming, the medal is awarded annually to individuals or teams for exceptional contributions to information sciences, systems, and technology. Subject areas include information theory, coding theory, data communication, computer networks, data storage and retrieval, and image and speech understanding.
