The Â鶹´«Ã½AV Information Theory Society Thomas M. Cover Dissertation Award, established in 2013, is awarded annually to the author of an outstanding doctoral dissertation contributing to theÌýmathematical foundations of any of the information sciences within the purview of the Society including, but not limited to, Shannon theory, source and channel coding theory, data compression, learning theory, quantum information theory and computing, complexity theory, and applications of information theory in probability and statistics.

The Â鶹´«Ã½AV Information Theory Society will present this award at the Â鶹´«Ã½AV International Symposium on Information Theory to be held June 29 - July 4, 2014, in Honolulu, Hawaii.

  • Eligibility: Each nominated dissertation must have been successfully defended between January 1, 2012 and December 31, 2013. Only English language versions will be considered.
  • Description of the Award: The award will consist of a plaque and a $1000 honorarium.
  • Nominations: Nominations should be submitted electronically to Michelle Effros ([email protected]) and Edmund Yeh ([email protected]) by January 15, 2014. Nominations must beÌýsubmitted by the dissertation advisor and must include:
    1. A copy of the dissertation.
    2. Copies of all refereed papers (published or submitted) spawned by the dissertation.
    3. A CV of the dissertation author.
    4. A statement from the nominator on the qualifications of the dissertation for the award.
    5. A maximum of three letters of support submitted directly to the selection committee.
